Miles for the Right Herbs: From the Texas Border to Both Coasts

All Articles Miles for the Right Herbs: From the Texas Border to Both Coasts

We live in Laredo, right on the Texas border, where the Rio Grande draws the line between two countries and the summer sun does not forgive anyone. It is home. It is also a long way from a lot of the places where the plants we love grow best. When we started AMA Remedies, we made ourselves a quiet promise: we would not settle for whatever showed up cheapest at the door. If a better herb existed somewhere, we would go find it.

That promise has taken us further than we ever expected.

It Began With a Disappointment

Early on, we ordered a batch of a common herb from a supplier that looked fine on paper. When it arrived, it was dull. The color was tired, the smell was faint, and you could tell it had been sitting in a warehouse far longer than anyone wanted to admit. We could have used it. Plenty of people would have. Instead we set it aside and started asking a better question: not "where is this cheapest," but "who grows this really well, and where?"

The answers were rarely close to home. They were scattered across the country, tucked into small farms and family operations that most people will never hear about.

Chasing the Right Growers

Certain plants simply belong to certain places. A root that thrives in the cool, damp air near the Pacific Northwest will sulk if you try to grow it somewhere hot and dry. A flower that loves the long light of a northern summer is a different plant entirely when it is rushed. So we learned to follow the plants to where they are happiest.

That has meant driving. A lot. We have loaded up and pointed the truck west toward the mountains and the coast, and we have gone the other direction too, out toward the eastern woodlands and the Atlantic side of the country. Some trips are for a single crop. Some are just to shake a grower's hand, walk their fields, and see with our own eyes how the plants are treated before they ever become part of our remedies.

Why We Bother

People sometimes ask why we do not just buy everything from one big distributor and be done with it. It would be easier. It would be cheaper. But something is lost when you never meet the person who grew your medicine.

When we know the grower, we know how the soil is cared for. We know whether the harvest was done at the right moment or whenever it was convenient. We know if the plant was dried gently or blasted with heat to save time. Those details do not show up on a label, but you can feel them in the finished product. This is a big part of how we make our products, and it is why we care so much about where our herbs actually come from.

Relationships, Not Transactions

Over the years the miles have turned strangers into friends. There are growers now who set aside their best harvest because they know we will appreciate it. There are farmers who call us when something special comes in. Those relationships are the real reward of all that travel. You cannot build them through a shopping cart.

We are a small family business. We do not have the reach of a giant company. What we have instead is time, attention, and a willingness to drive a very long way for a very good plant.

Still on the Road

We are not finished exploring. There are herbs we are still hunting for, growers we still hope to meet, and corners of the country we have not reached yet. Every batch teaches us something, and every trip adds another name to the list of people we trust.

So when you hold something we have made, know that it probably traveled a good stretch of this country to get to you. From the border to the coasts and back again, we go the distance because you deserve the real thing. You can always reach out if you would like to hear more of the story.
