The Ancient Art of Balance

傳統中醫Traditional Chinese Medicine

For more than two thousand years, Traditional Chinese Medicine has understood health as a living balance — a harmony of energy, nature, and the whole person. At AMA Remedies, we honor that tradition with a deep apothecary of classic Chinese botanicals, hand-crafted in small batches in Laredo, Texas.

A Whole-Person Tradition

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

TCM is one of the world’s oldest continuous systems of wellness — a way of seeing the body not as separate parts, but as one connected landscape shaped by the same rhythms found in nature.

Rather than focusing on a single symptom, TCM looks at the whole picture: how you sleep, digest, feel, and move through the seasons. Its practitioners have always drawn on several time-honored practices together — herbal medicine, nourishing foods, gentle movement like tai chi and qi gong, acupuncture, and rest.

Our love is the herbal side of that tradition. For thousands of years, Chinese herbalists have gathered, dried, and combined botanicals to gently support the body’s own balance. Many of those same herbs live in our apothecary today, prepared with the same care and respect.

The Foundations

Four ideas at the heart of TCM

You don’t need to master these to enjoy the herbs — but they make the tradition come alive.

Qi · 氣

Often translated as “vital energy,” Qi is the life force believed to flow through every living thing. When Qi moves freely and abundantly, the body is thought to feel balanced and well.

Yin & Yang · 陰陽

Two complementary forces — cool and warm, rest and activity, dark and light. Neither is “good” or “bad”; wellness is seen as the ever-shifting balance between them.

Five Elements · 五行

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — a poetic map linking the seasons, emotions, and organ systems, and describing how each nourishes and balances the next.

Meridians · 經絡

A network of channels along which Qi is said to travel, connecting the surface of the body to its inner organ systems — the pathways acupuncture and many herbs aim to support.

The Herbal Art

How Chinese herbs work together

TCM rarely relies on one herb alone. Its genius is the formula — herbs chosen to work in concert.

The Chief

The lead herb that addresses the main focus of the blend.

The Deputy

Supports and strengthens the chief, or tends to a second concern.

The Assistant

Balances or softens the stronger herbs so the blend sits gently.

The Envoy

Harmonizes everything and “guides” the formula through the body.

Chinese herbalists also consider each herb’s nature (warming or cooling) and its flavor (sweet, sour, bitter, pungent, salty) — a tradition of taste and temperature we love to bring into a custom cup.
