Mexico's Living Herbal Heritage
From the great markets of Tenochtitlan to the mercados of today, Mexico has kept a living tradition of plant healing — herbolaria — woven from Indigenous, Spanish, and many other roots. At AMA Remedies, born and rooted on the Texas–Mexico border in Laredo, we carry that heritage with pride and craft its beloved botanicals in small batches.
A Border-Country Tradition
Traditional Mexican Medicine is the folk healing of Mexico and its diaspora — a warm, home-centered practice built on plantas medicinales and passed down through families, mercados, and healers called curanderas and curanderos.
Its heart is herbolaria — the art of healing with plants. Long before the Spanish arrived, the peoples of Mesoamerica held vast botanical knowledge; the 1552 Aztec herbal known as the Libellus de Medicinalibus Indorum Herbis (the Badianus Manuscript) recorded hundreds of remedies. Over the centuries that wisdom blended with Spanish, African, and other traditions into the curanderismo practiced today.
You'll still find it alive in the mercado: fragrant bundles of manzanilla, ruda, and epazote, and the remedios caseros — home remedies — that grandmothers swear by. It's this everyday, family herbal tradition that we love to honor, one cup at a time.
