Korea's Time-Honored Healing Art

한의학Traditional Korean Medicine

Traditional Korean Medicine — Hanbang — grew from shared East Asian roots into a tradition all Korea's own: home of the famed Donguibogam and of Korean ginseng, prized the world over. At AMA Remedies we carry its treasured botanicals, hand-crafted in small batches in Laredo, Texas.

A Tradition of Its Own

What is Traditional Korean Medicine?

Known as Hanbang (한방) or Hanuihak (한의학), Korean medicine shares its earliest roots with China but was shaped over centuries into a distinctly Korean art.

Its crowning text is the Donguibogam (동의보꿀, "Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine"), compiled by the royal physician Heo Jun in 1613 and today inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register. Centuries later, the physician Lee Je-ma introduced Sasang constitutional medicine — a uniquely Korean idea that people fall into four body-mind types, each suited to different foods and herbs.

And no herb is more Korean than ginseng (insam): Korea's mountains and its red ginseng are famous around the globe. It's these prized botanicals — ginseng, doraji, omija and more — that we love to craft into a cup.

The Foundations

Four ideas at the heart of Hanbang

Shared East Asian roots, expressed in a distinctly Korean way.

Gi & Eumyang · 기 · 음양

Gi (vital energy) and Eumyang (yin & yang) — the flow and balance of energy through the body, the shared foundation of East Asian medicine.

Ohaeng · 오행 · five phases

The five elements — wood, fire, earth, metal, water — and the ways they nourish and balance one another through body and season.

Sasang · 사상 · four types

Korea's own constitutional medicine: four body-mind types (Taeyang, Taeeum, Soyang, Soeum), each with foods and herbs that suit it best.

Donguibogam · 동의보감

The revered 1613 medical encyclopedia by Heo Jun — a UNESCO-listed treasure that still anchors Korean herbal practice today.
