Japan's Refined Herbal Tradition
Kampo (漢方) is Japan's own system of herbal medicine — rooted in classical Chinese formulas brought across the sea centuries ago, then refined over generations into a distinctly Japanese art of gentle, precise, time-honored blends. At AMA Remedies we carry the botanicals at its heart, hand-crafted in small batches in Laredo, Texas.
From China to Japan
The word Kampo (漢方) means "the Han method" — a nod to the Chinese medical texts that first inspired it. But over more than a thousand years, Japan made the tradition its own.
Chinese herbal medicine reached Japan around the 6th century. By the Edo period, Japanese physicians had reshaped it into Kampo — a practice known for its careful, standardized formulas, its gentle dosing, and a hands-on diagnostic style all its own. Where its parent tradition leans on pulse and tongue, classical Kampo is especially known for fukushin — reading the tension and tone of the abdomen.
Today Kampo is a respected part of Japanese life, and its formulas are among the most studied herbal preparations in the world. What we love, and what we craft, are the beautiful botanicals those formulas are built from.
The Foundations
Familiar East Asian roots, shaped in a uniquely Japanese way.
The three vital substances — Ki (vital energy), Ketsu (blood), and Sui (fluids). Kampo seeks to keep them flowing freely and in balance.
The overall picture of a person at a moment in time. In Kampo the formula is matched to the sho, not just a single symptom — the whole guiding the choice.
Abdominal diagnosis — the distinctive Japanese art of gently palpating the belly to sense a person's condition and choose the fitting formula.
Kampo is built on set, time-tested formulas — precise combinations of herbs handed down and standardized, each balanced so the whole is greater than its parts.
The Herbal Art
Rarely one herb alone — almost always a balanced blend.
Herbs are combined so each supports and tempers the others.
Classic formulas follow set proportions, passed down with care.
Kampo is known for mild, everyday dosing rather than heroic amounts.

Because Kampo and Traditional Chinese Medicine share a materia medica, many of these botanicals will look familiar — here they carry their Japanese names and their place in Japan's own tradition.
