India's Science of Life
For over three thousand years, Ayurveda — the "science of life" — has guided well-being in India through balance: of the elements within us, of digestion, of daily rhythm and diet. At AMA Remedies we honor that heritage with a deep apothecary of classic Ayurvedic botanicals, hand-crafted in small batches in Laredo, Texas.
A Whole-Life Tradition
Ayurveda is one of the world's oldest living systems of wellness — born in the Indian subcontinent and still practiced today. Its name joins two Sanskrit words: āyus (life) and veda (knowledge).
Rather than treating one symptom in isolation, Ayurveda looks at the whole person — your constitution, digestion, sleep, mind, and the seasons around you — and seeks to keep them in balance. Its tools are gentle and daily: nourishing food, routine (dinacharya), yoga and breath, oil massage, and above all herbs.
That herbal heritage is what we love. For millennia, Ayurvedic vaidyas (practitioners) have combined botanicals into time-honored formulas, chosen by their taste, energy, and effect on digestion. Many of those same herbs live in our apothecary today, prepared with the same care and respect.
The Foundations
You don't need to master these to enjoy the herbs — but they bring the tradition to life.
Three mind-body energies — Vata (air & space), Pitta (fire & water), and Kapha (earth & water). Everyone is a unique blend, and balance among them is the heart of Ayurvedic wellness.
The "digestive fire." Ayurveda holds that strong, steady digestion is the root of good health — and that many herbs and spices are chosen to kindle and support it.
Sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent (rasa). Each taste is thought to act on the body and doshas differently — a meal or blend ideally touches all six.
The body's tissues (dhatus) and the subtle vital essence, ojas, that reflects deep vitality and immunity — nourished by good food, rest, and rejuvenating herbs (rasayana).
The Herbal Art
Every herb is understood through a few qualities that describe how it acts in the body.
Its taste (one or more of the six), the first clue to its action.
Its heating or cooling nature.
How it acts after digestion, over the longer term.
What it's taken with (warm water, milk, honey, ghee) to guide it.
Ayurveda rarely uses one herb alone. Classic formulas like Triphala (three fruits) and rejuvenating rasayanas blend herbs so their tastes and energies balance one another — a tradition of harmony we love to bring into a custom cup.
