Loose-Leaf Tea 101: Why the Whole Leaf Makes a Better Cup

All Articles

At AMA Remedies, we made a choice early on: we’d never bag our tea. Every blend we make is loose-leaf — whole herbs, flowers, and botanicals, measured by the spoonful. It takes a little more care, but the cup it makes is worth every bit. If you’ve only ever known tea from a paper bag, here’s why the loose leaf is such a lovely upgrade — and how to get the best from it.

What “loose-leaf” really means

Loose-leaf tea is simply tea that hasn’t been chopped up and packed into bags. Instead of the tiny dust and fragments (called “fannings”) that fill most tea bags, you get the whole leaf, the whole flower, the whole botanical. That difference — small as it sounds — changes everything about the cup.

Why the whole leaf makes a better cup

  • Fuller flavor and aroma. Whole leaves hold onto their essential oils — the very things that give tea its taste and scent. Ground-up bits lose those quickly, which is why bagged tea so often tastes flat.
  • Room to unfurl. Tea needs space to expand and swirl as it steeps. Crammed into a little bag, leaves can’t fully open. Loose in a pot or infuser, they bloom — and release their whole character.
  • Higher quality, plain and simple. The best gardens save their whole, unbroken leaves for loose-leaf; the leftover dust is what tends to end up in bags.
  • You see what you’re drinking. With loose-leaf there’s nothing to hide — you can see the actual herbs, flowers, and roots that went into your blend.
  • Kinder to the planet. Many tea bags are sealed with plastic. Loose-leaf skips that entirely — just plant, water, and a good steep.

One plant, many teas

Here’s a fun bit of tea trivia: white, green, oolong, and black tea all come from the same plantCamellia sinensis. What makes them so different isn’t the plant, but what happens after the leaves are picked:

  • White tea is barely handled — gently withered and dried — for a soft, delicate, naturally sweet cup.
  • Green tea is quickly heated after harvest to lock in its fresh, grassy character.
  • Oolong sits in between — partly oxidized, with lovely floral and fruity notes.
  • Black tea is fully oxidized, which gives it that deep color and bold, hearty flavor.

And then there’s our world.

Herbal blends & tisanes — where we live

Most of what we craft at AMA isn’t made from the tea plant at all. Our blends are herbal tisanes — loose-leaf infusions of herbs, flowers, roots, seeds, and fruit. They’re naturally caffeine-free (unless we’ve purposely added something like green tea or yerba mate), and they let us build a cup around exactly how you’d like to feel — calm, energized, settled, or clear. Every one is loose-leaf and blended by hand from botanicals you can see and name.

Getting the temperature right

One thing worth knowing: not every tea likes boiling water. Delicate leaves can turn bitter if the water’s too hot. A rough guide:

  • Black & hearty herbal blends: a full boil (around 212°F), steeped 3–7 minutes.
  • Oolong: just off the boil (190–200°F), 3–5 minutes.
  • White tea: 175–185°F, 3–5 minutes.
  • Green tea: cooler still (170–180°F), 2–3 minutes.

Most of our sturdy herbal blends are perfectly happy with hot, near-boiling water. For the full how-to — including the right temperature and steep time — check the “How to brew” directions on each tea’s product page.

Why we’ll always choose loose-leaf

For us, it comes back to the same thing that guides everything we make: a great cup starts with real, whole ingredients. Loose-leaf lets us use the best of the plant, blend it by hand in small batches, and hand you a cup that actually tastes like the garden it came from. It’s a little slower. It’s absolutely worth it.
